Geometry Course Description
Geometry includes all topics in a typical high school geometry course along with formal proofs: lines and angles, congruence, parallel lines, area, perimeter, similarity, right triangle trigonometry, circles, geometric solids, and nonEuclidean geometries. Students learn how to apply and calculate measurements of lengths, heights, circumference, areas, and volumes. In addition, students build on this inductive foundation by developing and applying logical deductive thought to develop proof patterns and mathematical arguments. Through guided discovery, the student will work with key geometry theorems and proofs with the focus on the development of critical thinking skills.
Important: Geometry includes a review of basic algebra skills throughout the year and is designed to be taken between the two Algebra courses. The material in Algebra II should be freshly taught to a student entering PreCalculus; going from Geometry to PreCalculus could be a difficult transition. Thus, HSML strongly recommends the following order of courses: Algebra I Geometry Algebra II PreCalculus. It is an option for a student to take Geometry and Algebra II concurrently if their schedule allows for a heavy math year.
