Honors Calculus II

Honors Calculus II Course Description

The prerequisite for this course is a college level Calculus I or AP® Calculus AB course.  Below is a list of Calculus I topics that this course assumes students have studied.  Honors Calculus II begins with Euler's Method, Arc Length, Logistics Growth Models, Integration by Parts and integration with partial fractions.  Following will be an extensive study of parametric equations, vectors, and polar equations utilizing Calculus concepts.  We will finish up our course with infinite sequences and series.  There are many "tests" to determine convergence of series.  These will be explored as well as Taylor and Maclaurin Series, and representations of functions as power series. This is an honors course that equates to a semester long Calculus II course at most colleges and universities.  Even though we cover a college level course over an entire school year, the pace is still brisk.  This is a challenging course that uses a college level textbook, written by James Stewart, which includes all the necessary concepts to prepare for a rigorous college calculus class.

If your student needs a more "gentle" course, a pass/fail option is available.  Mrs. London will provide weekly feedback on all assessments.  If this is the option your student wants to pursue, please advise Mrs. London by the start of classes.

A typical week in Honors Calculus II
At the beginning of each class, time will be devoted to answering any questions students may have from their homework practice.  Following will be the lesson with time for students to practice topics learned.  A brief break period will be incorporated into the class.

Between classes, it will be expected that students watch a recording of all homework practice problems and make note of any additional questions they may still have after viewing the homework solutions recording. These additional questions will be answered in the first part of the next class.

Calculus I topics that are prerequisites for Honors Calculus II:
  • Limits including L'Hospital's Rule and Limits at Infinity
  • Continuity
  • Derivatives and Rates of Change
  • Differentiation Rules including Product and Quotient Rules, Chain Rule
  • Implicit Differentiation
  • Related Rates and Optimization Problems
  • Straight-Line Motion: position, velocity, acceleration
  • Applications of the derivative including graphing using Calculus techniques
  • Riemann Sums, Integration, Definite/Indefinite Integrals, Substitution Rule
  • Areas/Volumes
  • Differential Equations, Direction (Slope) Fields and Separable Equations
These topics are discussed in the following sections of our textbook by James Stewart: Single Variable Calculus Early Transcendentals 7E:
Chapter 2 (omit 2.4), Chapter 3 (omit 3.11), Chapter 4 (omit 4.8), Chapter 5, Chapter 6 (omit 6.4), Chapter 9. 1 - 9.3 (omit Euler's Method).
