The honors courses at High School Math Live are designed to go quickly through review material so that more time can be spent on the deeper, rigorous aspects of each concept. We believe that many students "COULD" succeed for an honors-level course, but that many students will choose to register for on-level classes for a variety of reasons.

The time required to be successful in a math class varies greatly from student to student. If a student is willing to do "whatever it takes" to be successful, they can almost certainly do well in an honors class. But if a student has to spend an extraordinary amount of time to succeed, they often would prefer a class that allows for a more balanced schedule.
Here are a few examples:
Scenario 1: Student is very capable, possibly a bit bored in on-level classes and has therefore become lazy and not performed well.
Option 1: Although they have not had a high level of success in math classes, being in an honors class that challenges and inspires them to see the beauty of math could be very beneficial!
Option 2: Although they are capable of more, having a sure-and-steady math education is what they need right now and the on-level class will provide that. Sometimes there are many things that need attention in a student's life and having a huge emphasis on math would create less time and bandwidth to deal with other areas of life.
Scenario 2: Student has performed very well in on-level math classes:
Option 1: Student could register for honors-level courses which they would find more challenging. They may rise to the occasion and be an excellent student in this level as well.
Option 2: Student enjoys success in math with the time and effort they are currently putting in to math because it allows them to pursue other interests and therefore they prefer to continue in on-level math courses.
Scenario 3: Student has always felt like math was a struggle.
Student should take the on-level math class in order to have the opportunity to learn the concepts at a pace that will give them time to process and comprehend what is being taught. They should start the course with knowledge that we believe that they CAN be successful and, with the right amount of effort on their part, we will help them to do that!
If a student registers for an honors level course and finds the class to be too challenging, they will be allowed to switch to an on-level class (at no cost).
