General Student Commitments
To be successful, HSML students must choose to utilize the tools available to them. Classes are recorded and the notes are available online – which only helps if the student will access them when they need more information. Making a commitment to learn in this manner requires discipline and consistency.
Self-motivated
To be successful, HSML students should be actively involved during class time. It is important that students take advantage of the opportunity to interact with their teacher by asking and answering questions during class. By interacting during class, a student has the opportunity to check their comprehension of the concept being taught and to be fully prepared to complete the homework assigned between classes.
Good Time Management
Students must be able to organize and plan their time between classes so that each time they come to class they have completed the assignment and are prepared to ask questions and then move on to the next concept that will be taught. It is important to consistently touch math once each day, either by attending class or doing the homework or quiz. Trying to “binge” math in a once-a-week marathon setting is highly unproductive and does not lead to a student’s success.
Effective Communicator
A good online student will ask for help when there is a problem. If something comes up that causes you to need more time to complete an assignment, or if you can’t access your notebook or the class page, communicate with your teacher immediately.
Computer Literate
Although it is not necessary to have advanced computer skills, students should possess a working knowledge of electronic e-mail, the Internet, as well as basic keyboarding skills. Successful online learners have easy access to a computer and the Internet both during class and while working on homework. Accessing the class notebook, class recordings, and individual student notebook is an important tool.
- Your schedule should allow for regular class attendance.
- Sit down at your computer about 5 minutes before class begins. Have your homework and questions readily accessible so YOU are prepared for class.
- Complete your homework as assigned. Check solutions if applicable before class. Know which questions you want discussed in class. BE PREPARED! Math concepts build upon themselves quickly and must be practiced and repeated to be mastered thus providing the necessary skills to do well on assessments.
- Participate in class. Ask questions. Answer questions. Students are encouraged to use private chats to teacher and remember ALL chat messaging is recorded and stored.
- Be self-disciplined to stay focused during class. Limit possible distractions.
- You should respect classmates by showing kindness and courtesy in your words and actions. Private messaging draws attention away from the lesson so you should not send instant messages to each other during class. All chat messaging is recorded and stored.
- Take excellent notes in an organized notebook.
- Turn in your weekly assignments on time! Be accountable for deadlines.
- After an absence, review the class recording and complete assigned work as soon as possible. Ask questions on concepts that you do not understand.
